Swedish Meatballs


A traditional Swedish dish served with the lingonberry preserves that are ubiquitous in Scandinavia.

Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup cream
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • Lingonberry jam, as desired

Instructions:
1. Sauté onions in butter until translucent.

2. Soak bread crumbs in milk.

3. In a food processor, combine sautéed onions, soaked bread crumbs, beef, pork, salt, pepper, nutmeg, allspice, and egg.

4. Shape into meatballs.

5. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet. Brown meatballs until cooked on each side. Place cooked meatballs in oven to keep warm.

6. After done cooking all meatballs, pour broth into pan and stir together with residue from meatballs. Add cream and flour and stir until thickened.

7. Pour gravy over warm meatballs and serve with lingonberry jam.
